Adani Launches India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Mining Truck in Chhattisgarh

A Bold Step Towards Sustainable Mining and Decarbonisation

Adani Group has taken a major leap in clean energy adoption by launching India’s first hydrogen-powered truck for mining logistics in Chhattisgarh. The truck, designed for heavy-duty cargo transport, can carry 40 tonnes over a 200-kilometre range. This move highlights Adani Enterprises’ commitment to cleaner and more sustainable logistics operations.

Key Highlights of Adani’s Hydrogen Truck Launch

Adani marks a major step towards sustainable mining by introducing India’s first hydrogen-powered mining truck.

  • India’s First Hydrogen Mining Truck: Deployed in Raipur, the truck was flagged off by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.

  • Cargo Capacity and Range: Each truck can carry 40 tonnes of cargo with a 200 km range, powered by three hydrogen tanks.

  • Collaborative Development: The truck is developed with the support of both Indian and international energy tech firms, along with a leading auto manufacturer.

  • Sustainable Operations: These trucks are part of Adani’s roadmap to replace diesel vehicles in logistics and mining operations.

Strategic Push for Clean Transportation

This hydrogen-powered truck will be used to transport coal from the Gare Pelma III Block to the Chhattisgarh state power plant. Adani Enterprises has been appointed the Mine Developer and Operator (MDO) for this coal block through a competitive bidding process by the state-owned Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited.

Statements from Key Leaders

Vishnu Deo Sai, Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, stated, “The launch of India’s first hydrogen-powered truck in Chhattisgarh reflects the state’s commitment to sustainability. Such initiatives will significantly reduce our carbon footprint and set a new standard for industry.”

Vinay Prakash, CEO – Natural Resources and Director, Adani Enterprises, commented, “This initiative reinforces our commitment to decarbonisation and responsible mining. We are creating model mines with minimal environmental impact through advanced technologies and green energy solutions. Our aim is to ensure reliable and affordable electricity for all while setting benchmarks in sustainable practices.”

Integration with Adani’s Green Ecosystem

The hydrogen truck project is a joint initiative of Adani Natural Resources (ANR) and Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL). While ANR handles coal and mineral operations, ANIL supplies hydrogen fuel cells and is also engaged in manufacturing green hydrogen, solar modules, wind turbines, and batteries.

Additionally, ANR has become the first in Asia to deploy Dozer Push Semi-Autonomous Technology in mining, improving safety and operational efficiency.

Why Hydrogen Matters

Hydrogen is the most abundant element and emits only water vapour and warm air when used in fuel cells, producing zero harmful emissions. Hydrogen trucks match diesel in performance and load capacity but drastically reduce noise and pollution.

By transitioning to hydrogen-powered vehicles, Adani aims to lower India’s carbon footprint, reduce diesel dependency in mining, and contribute meaningfully to national energy security goals.

Outlook for Green Mining and Clean Energy

This initiative is not just a milestone for the Adani Group but a pivotal step for India’s clean energy ambitions. With mining traditionally dependent on diesel machinery, the shift to hydrogen will play a vital role in curbing carbon emissions.

As India continues its transition towards sustainable development, initiatives like this set the tone for greener, smarter, and more responsible industrial operations.
