The project also includes Ballard Power for Asia’s first Hydrogen-Powered Fuel Cell Electric Truck for mining.
Ashok Leyland has signed an agreement with Adani Enterprises Limited to take the mission of alternative fuel in the right direction. The Canadian Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell maker Ballard is also a part of this project. This truck will be Asia’s first hydrogen fuel cell electric truck (FCET) for mining logistics. It will make Adani group the first company in Asia and the world’s first to deploy this technology in mining.
Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL) will lead the demonstration of the project. In addition, the company will also focus on taking this project from mining to sourcing, transportation and building the hydrogen refuelling infrastructure. Also, Ballard is a leader in the PEM fuel cell manufacturing industry and will supply the FCmove fuel cell-powered engine for the hydrogen truck. Also, Ashok Leyland will provide all the technical support and vehicle platform for manufacturing. According to the officials, the FCET (Fuel Cell Electric Truck) is planned to launch in 2023.
Mr N Saravanan, CTO of Ashok Leyland, said, “Ashok Leyland is excited to collaborate with Adani and Ballard to bring out fuel cell commercial vehicles in the mining and logistics sectors in India. With our track record of developing unique and new products, Ballard’s technological expertise in fuel cells, and Adani’s unwavering dedication to hydrogen, there is a significant opportunity for India to decarbonise both goods and passenger transportation,”
Adani Enterprises Limited has already announced that they plan to invest $50 billion for the next 10 years. The investment will cover the technology for green hydrogen and all of its related ecosystems. In addition, it will also include creating plants for generating 3 million tonnes of hydrogen annually.
Randy MacEwen, CEO of Ballard Power Systems, said, “After signing an MoU with the Adani Group last year, we are eager to move our partnership forward and welcome the chance to cooperate with cutting-edge businesses like Adani,” Our technology offers a strong value proposition for their heavy-duty mining trucks with our zero-emission engines providing long range, rapid refuelling, and heavy payload capabilities,”.
The upcoming Hydrogen Fuel powered truck will be manufactured with a GVW of 55 tonnes and will have 3 hydrogen tanks providing a range of 200 km. In addition, the truck will be powered with Ballard’s 120 kW PEM fuel cell technology.
Mr Vinay Prakash, the CEO of Adani Enterprises Ltd. and CEO of Adani Natural Resources, said, “This pioneering and ambitious green hydrogen project holds a strong promise for India’s future energy self-reliance and is consistent with the vision of Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, of accelerating the use of hydrogen-powered fuel cell technology in the commercial transport system. This experience of handling hydrogen as a fuel for commercial fleets not only prepones the advent of hydrogen technology for the mining and logistics sectors in the country but will also enable other businesses to opt for long-term sustainable solutions transitioning fleets in ports, airports, and in their industrial operations.”
