Ashok Leyland & Reliance Industries Revealed India’s 1st Hydrogen-Powered HCV

Ashok Leyland, one of India’s biggest commercial vehicle manufacturers and Reliance Industries unveiled India’s first hydrogen-powered truck. The first Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) powered was flagged off by PM Narendra Modi in Bengaluru at India Energy Week. Both companies have been working on this technology over the past year. Also, this truck has been under testing since August 2022.

This Ashok Leyland H2-ICE truck range is based on Hydrogen, but it has the overall architecture of conventional Diesel engines. It has a loading capacity of 19-35 tons. In addition, it helps the quick migration to cleaner energy at a low cost compared to Diesel vehicles.

On the launch, Dr N Saravanan, President and Chief Technology Officer Ashok Leyland, said, “Working with RIL, we have once again demonstrated our technological leadership and our commitment to the Clean Mobility Mission.”

“Our aim is to make India’s alternate fuel segment self-reliant and be one of the flag bearers of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ campaign”. He also added

The Hydrogen-Internal Combustion Engine technology is very promising for clean mobility solutions. However, the cost of this fuel is high owing to the limited availability of hydrogen fuel. In addition, the central government is also working on the National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap and its promotional activities. Like the National Hydrogen Energy Mission.

Last month at the Auto Expo, Ashok Leyland also revealed some vehicles from its futuristic range. The vehicles are based on Electric and Hydrogen fuels.
