The Commercial Vehicle sector sold 85,587 in April 2023 and faced a little slowdown in sales. The pre-buying of March 2023 was claimed as the reason for this slowdown.
FADA (FEDERATION OF AUTOMOBILE DEALERS ASSOCIATIONS) has released the sales numbers for April 2023 and experienced a little growth in the Y-O-Y sales. Looks like it has become a pattern in CV sales to witness a slow start in the first month of the new fiscal year. Moreover, ever since the BS6 OBD2 engine norm has been introduced, the rates of all the vehicles across all the categories have increased.
Looking at the complete sales report for April 2023, there is a sales growth of 1.9%. The CV sector sold 85,587 units in April 2023, compared to 83,987 units in April 2022. SML Isuzu remained the company with the highest growth of 44.59%, whereas Tata Motors witnessed a downfall of 6.14%.
Commenting on the CV sectors' performance in April, FADA President, Mr Manish Raj Singhania, said —"The CV segment maintained positive momentum with a 2% YoY increase in retail sales. However, dealers reported that vehicle availability was a major concern due to the OBD 2A norms. In addition, the low base from last year also contributed to the positive growth."

Tata Motors is one of the most renowned vehicle manufacturers globally. The brand sold 33,120 units in April 2023, lower than the 35,287 units in April 2022. The sales of this brand dropped by 6.14% in the Y-o-Y sales comparison.
Mahindra & Mahindra:-
Mahindra also registered a downfall in their commercial vehicle sales statistics in April 2023. The company sold 16,957 units in April 2023, which was 17,785 units in April 2022. As a result, Mahindra observed a loss of 4.65%.
Ashok Leyland company sold 15,787 units of commercial vehicles in April 2023, which closed at 13,256 units in April 2022. Resulting in a growth of 19.09% in April Y-O-Y sales.
VECV, the joint venture of Volvo Trucks India and Eicher Motors, also witnessed good growth in sales. The venture closed in April 2022 with 5,780 units; in April 2023, the company sold 7,278 units which was 25.91% higher than the previous year.
Maruti Suzuki sold 3,528 units of commercial vehicles in April 2023, which was 3,598 units in the previous year. As a result, the company witnessed a downfall of 1.94%.
Daimler is one of the biggest automobile manufacturers globally, and companies like Mercedes-Benz, Detroit Diesel and others come under this group. In India, Daimler works under the name of BharatBenz. The brand sold 1,883 units in April 2023, which closed at 1,655 CV units in April 2022 and observed a hike of 13.77%.
SML Isuzu sold 814 units of Commercial Vehicles in April 2022, and the brand sold 1,177 units in April this year. The brand registered the highest growth in the April 2023 Y-O-Y sales by 44.59%.
Force Motors is a famous commercial vehicle manufacturer in India. In April 2022, the brand sold 881 units of commercial vehicles, which grew to 1,142 units in April 2023. As a result, the brand secured growth of 29.62%
Other CV OEMs:-
The cumulative sales data of all the other brands witnessed a decline in sales. The total sales number of all the brands was 4,715 units in April 2023, compared to 4,931 units in April 2022. As a result, the sales decreased by 4.30%.
