Delhi to Install More EV Charging Stations Across the City

Delhi Government Announces Big Plans Under EV Policy 2.0

The Delhi government has shared a new plan to set up a strong network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the city. The aim is to make Delhi a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable place by 2030. Additionally, this move will make it easier for people to own and operate electric commercial vehicles in the years to come.

Focus on Strong Targets for Charging Stations

Under the updated Delhi EV Policy 2.0, the government plans to install 13,700 public charging points by 2030. By 2025, 3,500 charging points will be established. In addition, the city will ensure that there is at least one charging and battery swapping station available within every one square kilometer area.

Moreover, public charging stations will be available every five kilometers across the city. This step will help alleviate concerns about charging availability and promote the adoption of more electric vehicles like the electric three-wheeler, auto rickshaw, etc.

Detailed Planning for Installation

To complete this project, the Delhi Transport Department will create detailed plans for every part of the city. It will use underused public spaces like areas under flyovers, parking lots, and open land near telecom towers for installing charging stations.

In addition to public spaces, the government is also encouraging private and semi-public places like malls, offices, hospitals, and government buildings to install chargers. To support this plan, financial help is being offered:

  • A 50% subsidy of up to Rs 2,500 per unit for the first 15,000 slow AC chargers.
  • A subsidy of Rs 20,000 per unit for the first 2,000 fast DC chargers.

Perhaps this move will help more businesses and locations easily install chargers without high costs.

Building on Past Success

The new plan builds on the earlier Delhi Electric Vehicles Policy 2020. So far, the city has already installed over 5,000 EV charging points and more than 400 battery swapping stations.

Thanks to these efforts, Delhi saw a 30% rise in EV sales in 2024 compared to 2022. More than 82,000 new electric vehicles were registered, giving Delhi the highest EV sales share in India at 12%. The national average currently stands at 7.7%.

Steps Towards Greener Public Transport

Delhi is also working to make its public transport system greener. By 2026, half of the electricity used during the day for charging electric buses is expected to come from renewable energy sources. Similarly, one-fourth of the electricity used at night for charging will also be generated from renewable sources.

All bus depots will soon have rooftop solar systems to generate their electricity. Additionally, bus operators will be permitted to utilise each other’s charging setups. This will avoid waste and improve overall efficiency. Operators will also charge buses during non-peak hours to help reduce pressure on the city’s power grid.
