This Earth Day, celebrated on April 22, 2025, brought a wave of positive developments for India’s green mobility journey. With the theme "Our Power, Our Planet," the message was loud and clear—electric vehicles are the future, and India is leading the way. The recent Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 turned out to be the perfect platform to highlight the country’s achievements and new launches in the electric commercial vehicle (EV) space.
Major Electric Vehicle Launches at Bharat Mobility Expo 2025
The Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 witnessed the unveiling of nearly 90 new vehicles. Most of them were powered by electric technology, ranging from electric buses and trucks to three-wheelers and small commercial vehicles (SCVs). This major event also aligned with Earth Day, reflecting the Government of India’s strong commitment to cleaner and greener transportation.
Key Light Commercial Vehicle Launches at the Expo
Here are some of the top electric commercial vehicles introduced at the Expo:
- Montra Electric: The company introduced Eviator, an electric small commercial vehicle (e-SCV), and Super Cargo, an electric three-wheeler with a 1.2-tonne gross vehicle weight. Both vehicles are designed for efficient cargo transport and suit last-mile delivery needs.
- EKA Mobility: EKA launched six new electric commercial vehicles, including EKA 3.5T, 2.5T, and 1.5T trucks, along with electric three-wheelers like the EKA 1700K cargo model. These vehicles support both passenger and cargo segments.
- Omega Seiki: Omega Seiki showcased its M1KA 1.0 electric truck, which comes at a competitive price of ₹6.99 lakh. It also teased its M1KA 3.0 model and launched the updated 2025 Stream City electric passenger vehicle.
- Eicher Motors: Eicher made a strategic entry into the 2-3.5-tonne SCV segment with its Eicher Pro X Series—a new range of electric small commercial vehicles aimed at urban delivery and logistics.
- Ashok Leyland: One of India’s largest commercial vehicle makers, Ashok Leyland, launched the Saathi light commercial vehicle. It offers 45 hp power, 110 Nm torque, and a payload capacity of 1120 kg—making it ideal for small business operations and delivery services.
Strong Growth of Electric Commercial Vehicles in FY 2024-25
Apart from new launches, India’s EV industry witnessed strong growth in the financial year 2024-25. According to data from the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), over 1 million electric vehicles were sold, showcasing a rising shift towards clean mobility.
Specifically, electric three-wheelers (L5 category) saw a remarkable rise in demand. Sales stood at 1,59,235 units, which is 57% higher than the 1,01,581 units sold in FY 2023-24. This growth reflects how both individual buyers and fleet operators are increasingly choosing electric options for transportation and delivery services.
Policy Support and Environmental Benefits
The government’s flagship scheme, PM E-DRIVE, launched in September 2024, has been a key driver of this transformation. With a total outlay of ₹10,900 crore till March 2026, the scheme replaced the previous Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) and now supports the growth of e-3W and other EV categories.
Here are some positive environmental results from this initiative:
- Fuel saved per day: 8,55,723 litres
- Total fuel saved: 15,77,33,334 litres
- CO₂ reduced per day: 12,48,100 kg
- Total CO₂ reduction: 23,01,73,978 kg
These results show how EVs are not only reducing pollution but also helping the country reduce its fuel import bill.
Future Outlook for Light Commercial Vehicles and EV Sector
The demand for last-mile delivery vehicles is growing rapidly due to the expansion of online shopping and doorstep deliveries. As a result, the light commercial vehicle market is expanding steadily. According to Statista, the segment is expected to reach 0.86 million unit sales in 2025, and grow at a CAGR of 3.05% till 2029, reaching 0.97 million units by then.
This shift towards electric LCVs is also driven by the need for cost-effective, zero-emission transport options that can operate in city environments. EVs offer lower running costs, higher efficiency, and are much more eco-friendly than diesel vehicles.
India’s Vision for a Sustainable Future
Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, praised the progress and said:
“Under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi avaru, India is driving the global transition to sustainable mobility. The achievement of over 1 million EVs sales is a testament to the success of MHI’s flagship schemes. This milestone reaffirms our commitment to building a cleaner, greener, and self-reliant India.”
