Commercial Vehicle Retail Sales Drop by 4.28% in May 2025
The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) has released the commercial vehicle (CV) retail data for May 2025. According to the report, total CV sales stood at 75,165 units, compared to 78,530 units in May 2024, reflecting a year-on-year (YoY) decline of 4.28%.
FADA’s View on Market Trends
Sharing insights on May’s performance, FADA President Mr. C S Vigneshwar said, “The commercial-vehicle retails declined by 11.25% MoM and 3.71% YoY amid muted freight cycles, tight liquidity, and adverse geopolitical sentiment. While bus sales offered some relief, passenger carriers and commodity-linked segments (cement, coal) saw sharp de-growth due to delayed financing and softening TIV. Wholesales, however, accelerated as OEMs and Dealers built inventory ahead of the June 2025 mandatory A/C driver-cabin regulation.”
Brand-Wise Commercial Vehicle Sales Report for May 2025
Tata Motors
Tata Motors retained its top position in the market but registered an 11.56% YoY decline, selling 26,100 units in May 2025 compared to 29,512 units in May 2024. The drop is mainly attributed to reduced demand in the SCV and ICV segments and buyer hesitation around fleet expansion.
Mahindra & Mahindra
Mahindra & Mahindra reported a marginal decline of 0.05%, with 19,816 units sold in May 2025 against 19,826 units last year. Strong performance in rural and semi-urban markets kept the numbers largely stable.
Ashok Leyland
Ashok Leyland recorded slight YoY growth of 0.94%, selling 13,763 units compared to 13,635 units in May 2024. Healthy demand for buses and selected M&HCV models contributed to this positive performance.
VE Commercial Vehicles
VE Commercial Vehicles (a joint venture between Volvo and Eicher Trucks) saw a 2.08% growth, retailing 6,734 units in May 2025 versus 6,597 units in May 2024. The growth was supported by rising interest in its ICV portfolio and regional expansion.
Force Motors
Force Motors achieved impressive growth of 27.08% YoY, with 2,088 units sold in May 2025 as compared to 1,643 units last year. Demand was primarily driven by institutional and government orders in the staff and school transport categories.
Maruti Suzuki
Maruti Suzuki registered a 7.00% YoY decline, selling 3,122 units in May 2025 against 3,357 units in May 2024. Competitive pricing pressures and soft demand in the mini truck segment affected its performance.

Daimler India (BharatBenz) posted a slight YoY decline of 0.82%, selling 1,825 units in May 2025 versus 1,840 units in May 2024. High-end haulage segments remained cautious with bulk purchases.
SML Isuzu
SML Isuzu saw a 2.86% increase, with sales reaching 1,509 units in May 2025, up from 1,467 units in May 2024. The brand benefitted from consistent demand in the bus segment and small cargo applications.
