Govt Launches ₹3,000 FASTag Annual Pass with 200 Trip Limit for Highway Travel

Govt Launches ₹3,000 FASTag Annual Pass with 200 Trip Limit for Highway Travel

A Major Reform to Ease Highway Travel with Fasttag Annual Pass

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced a landmark initiative on June 18, 2025, introducing a FASTag-based Annual Pass designed to make national highway travel more seamless and affordable for private vehicle owners across India. Priced at ₹3,000, this new system will come into effect on August 15, 2025.

Key Highlights of FASTag Annual Pass Announcement

The pass is aimed at reducing toll hassles and bringing nationwide convenience under one standardised policy.

  • Price: ₹3,000
  • Validity: One year from activation or 200 trips—whichever comes first
  • Eligibility: Non-commercial vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans
  • Coverage: All National Highways across India
  • Activation: Through Rajmarg Yatra App, NHAI & MoRTH websites
  • No document change required for existing FASTag users

Seamless Travel Across India’s National Highways

This FASTag Annual Pass has been introduced to cut down waiting times at toll plazas, reduce traffic congestion, and ensure a hassle-free driving experience. Private vehicle owners can now make a single payment for up to 200 trips without the need for repeated recharges or toll stoppages.

Nitin Gadkari stated, “This policy is a transformative step to simplify toll payments and address long-standing issues with toll plazas situated within a 60 km range. Our aim is to deliver faster, smoother, and more affordable highway travel for citizens.”

Transition Made Easy for Existing FASTag Users

Existing FASTag account holders do not need to create new accounts or provide extra documentation. The pass will integrate directly into their current FASTag system. The previously proposed ₹30,000 lifetime pass valid for 15 years has now been officially scrapped in favour of this more flexible and economical model.

Clarification on Toll System Rumours

Amid growing speculation, the Ministry clarified that satellite-based tolling systems are not replacing FASTag from May 1, 2025. While the ANPR-FASTag barrier-less tolling is being tested at selected plazas, any further rollout will be based on the technology’s efficiency and public response.

“All National Highway toll plazas currently operate on the ICD 2.5 protocol, which ensures real-time FASTag status. Users can continue to recharge their accounts anytime before crossing a toll plaza,” the Ministry confirmed.

A Glimpse into Future Toll Collection

The long-term vision includes leveraging sensor-based systems, GPS, and vehicle tracking technologies to build a fully automated, barrier-free toll collection system. The new FASTag Annual Pass is the first major step in that direction, making tolling smarter and more commuter-friendly.

Statements from the Ministry

“The FASTag Annual Pass marks a significant reform in toll management. By consolidating multiple transactions into a single, fixed annual fee, we are taking concrete steps to modernise India’s highway infrastructure,” said an official from MoRTH.

Looking Ahead: Affordable Mobility for Millions

With this initiative, the government aims to enhance user convenience, reduce operational bottlenecks, and set the stage for more advanced tolling mechanisms. The FASTag Annual Pass is expected to benefit millions of private vehicle owners while supporting the broader vision of Digital India and Smart Transportation.
