Indian Commercial Vehicle Industry Begins Shift to Hydrogen Technology

2 Major CV Brands Begin India’s Shift to Hydrogen Power

India’s commercial vehicle industry has started using hydrogen-powered vehicles to reduce pollution and move towards clean energy. Companies like Ashok Leyland and Tata Motors are leading this change by introducing hydrogen trucks and buses in selected areas.

Ashok Leyland’s Hydrogen Trucks Already on Roads

Ashok Leyland, along with Reliance Industries, launched India’s first heavy-duty hydrogen-powered truck in 2023. Since then, more than 20 such trucks have been working regularly. These trucks have already covered nearly 2.5 lakh kilometres, mostly around Reliance’s Jamnagar plant in Gujarat.

In addition, Ashok Leyland has also partnered with NTPC Green Energy to bring hydrogen fuel cell buses for public transport. These buses are now being used in different areas, including Delhi, Leh, and Ladakh. These places include both cities and hilly areas, where normal fuel transport is sometimes difficult.

Tata Motors Also Testing Hydrogen Vehicles

On the other hand, Tata Motors has also started testing hydrogen-powered vehicles. The company is working on both hydrogen fuel cell buses and hydrogen internal combustion trucks. These vehicles are being tested in different conditions, though the company has not yet announced when they will start commercial operations.

Support from Government and Growing Interest

Many of these efforts are connected to the Government of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. This mission was started in January 2023 and comes with a budget of ₹19,744 crore. It aims to make India self-reliant in clean energy by 2030.

Moreover, public-private partnerships are helping companies take early steps in using hydrogen vehicles. However, some challenges still exist, like building proper fuel stations, reducing the cost of hydrogen, and setting up a smooth supply chain.

Other Companies Watching the Progress

Besides Ashok Leyland and Tata Motors, other commercial vehicle makers are also studying hydrogen technology. Many are planning research, pilot projects, and small trials to check if hydrogen is suitable for their vehicles.

In conclusion, India’s journey with hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles has started slowly but surely. Though it is still in the early stage, more developments and wider use can be expected in the coming years.
