Indian Vehicle Horns May Soon Play Flute and Tabla Sounds: Gadkari Plans New Law

A Cultural Shift Towards Pleasant and Soothing Road Sounds

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, recently announced plans to introduce a law mandating Indian musical instrument sounds in vehicle horns. This proposal aims to reduce noise pollution and enhance the auditory environment. It was shared during the 78th Foundation Year Celebration of Navbharat Times, held on April 21.

Key Highlights of Gadkari’s Proposal

This groundbreaking proposal aims to enhance the auditory experience on Indian roads while preserving the rich cultural heritage of the nation.

  • Gadkari stated, "I am planning to make a law that horns of all vehicles should be in Indian musical instruments so that it is pleasant to hear. Flute, tabla, violin, harmonium."

  • This idea focuses on replacing harsh and disturbing honking with softer, culturally rooted alternatives.

  • He added that sirens used in emergency vehicles like ambulances and police vans could also be replaced with tunes played on All India Radio (AIR).

  • This is not the first time such a proposal has been discussed. In 2021, Gadkari had earlier hinted at similar plans.

Linking Transport with Environment and Innovation

The minister highlighted how the transport sector significantly affects air quality, accounting for 40% of the country’s air pollution. He reinforced the Modi government’s push towards promoting green and bio-fuel alternatives, including methanol and ethanol-powered vehicles, which are part of the broader goal to reduce environmental impact.

India’s Global Position in the Auto Sector

Gadkari proudly mentioned that India has become the third-largest automobile market in the world, surpassing Japan and following only the United States and China. He noted, “India gets maximum revenue from exports of two-wheeler vehicles and cars.”

Economic Growth of the Automobile Sector

According to Gadkari, the Indian automobile sector was valued at ₹14 lakh crore in 2014, and this figure has now grown to ₹22 lakh crore. This growth indicates the sector's expanding contribution to the economy, positioning India as a major player in the global mobility industry.

Statement from the Union Minister

Gadkari emphasized, "I am planning to make a law that horns of all vehicles should be in Indian musical instruments so that it is pleasant to hear. Flute, tabla, violin, harmonium."
He further remarked, “The transport sector contributes to 40 per cent of the air pollution in the country.”

He also shared, “India gets maximum revenue from exports of two-wheeler vehicles and cars.”
Additionally, he stated, “In 2014, the Indian automobile sector was valued at Rs 14 trillion, which has now grown to Rs 22 trillion.”

Finally, he acknowledged the media industry challenges, adding, “Running a newspaper is difficult as the owner has to raise money from advertisement to meet its operational expenses.”

Outlook on Future Road Experience

If implemented, this law could redefine the auditory experience on Indian roads, replacing chaotic honking with pleasant musical sounds. Moreover, it aligns with the broader narrative of sustainable transportation, combining cultural identity with environmental consciousness.

As India moves towards becoming a global mobility leader, such innovative measures reflect a bold approach. These thoughtful steps aim to shape the nation’s road culture in a unique way.
