Tata Motors Begins India’s First Hydrogen Truck Trials for Green Transport

Advancing India’s Sustainable Commercial Vehicle Industry

Tata Motors, India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, has taken a historic step in the country’s green mobility journey by launching trials for its first hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks. This initiative aligns with India's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. The trial was flagged off by Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, and Shri Pralhad Joshi, Hon’ble Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy. The event also witnessed the presence of Tata Motors’ Executive Director, Mr. Girish Wagh, alongside key government officials.

Key Highlights of the Hydrogen Truck Trials

Tata Motors is pioneering hydrogen mobility in India's commercial vehicle sector with this groundbreaking initiative.

  • Tata Motors launches India’s first hydrogen truck trials under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
  • Deployment of 16 hydrogen-powered trucks with H2-ICE and FCEV technologies.
  • Trucks will be tested across major freight corridors including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur, and Kalinganagar.
  • Trial to span up to 24 months, assessing commercial viability and enabling infrastructure for hydrogen mobility.

Government Endorsement and Vision for Green Mobility

Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon'ble Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, emphasized the importance of hydrogen as a future fuel, stating, "Hydrogen has immense potential to transform India’s transportation sector by reducing emissions and enhancing energy self-reliance. Initiatives like these will accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility and bring us closer to a low-carbon future. I congratulate Tata Motors for taking the lead in this significant step towards hydrogen-powered green transportation."

Shri Pralhad Joshi, Hon'ble Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, highlighted the role of hydrogen in India's energy transition, adding, "The beginning of this trial is a major milestone in showcasing the potential of green hydrogen in decarbonizing India's transportation sector. This initiative, under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, reaffirms our commitment to driving innovation and achieving energy independence."

Tata Motors' Commitment to Sustainable Mobility

Speaking at the event, Mr. Girish Wagh, Executive Director, Tata Motors, reiterated the company's commitment to green transportation, saying, "Tata Motors is proud to lead India’s transition towards cleaner and smarter mobility solutions. With the launch of hydrogen truck trials, we are taking another step forward in pioneering sustainable energy for long-haul transportation. We appreciate the Indian government’s visionary leadership and remain committed to developing future-ready mobility solutions."

Cutting-Edge Hydrogen Truck Technologies

The hydrogen trucks deployed for trials include advanced models equipped with Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (H2-FCEV) technologies. The lineup includes:

  • Tata Prima H.55S powered by H2-ICE and FCEV technologies.
  • Tata Prima H.28, an advanced H2-ICE truck.
  • Operational range of 300-500 km, ensuring sustainable and cost-efficient freight transport.
  • Premium Prima cabin with enhanced driver-assist safety features to reduce fatigue and improve productivity.

Strengthening India's Alternative Fuel Ecosystem

Tata Motors has been at the forefront of alternative fuel technologies, including battery electric, CNG, LNG, hydrogen internal combustion, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The company successfully deployed 15 Hydrogen FCEV buses as part of a previous tender and continues to expand its green vehicle portfolio across various commercial segments.

With this landmark hydrogen truck trial, Tata Motors is reinforcing its role in shaping India's sustainable commercial vehicle industry, paving the way for a cleaner and more energy-efficient future.
