Telangana Approves Auto LPG for 40,000 New Autos in Hyderabad

Big Step Towards Clean Fuel in Hyderabad

In a major step to improve air quality and promote clean mobility, the Telangana government has approved the use of Auto LPG as a fuel for 40,000 new autorickshaws within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) area of Hyderabad. This decision is seen as a strong move to reduce harmful emissions and improve the environment in the city.

What Is Auto LPG and Why It Matters

Auto LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is already being used in many countries as an alternative to petrol and diesel. It is not only more affordable but also helps reduce pollution caused by vehicles. Auto LPG produces fewer harmful emissions such as carbon monoxide and particulate matter, which directly affect the air we breathe.

In India, the use of Auto LPG is still limited compared to fuels like CNG and petrol. However, with this recent move by Telangana, it may gain more importance in the future. The decision has been welcomed by the Indian Auto LPG Coalition (IAC), which works to promote clean fuel options in the country.

Support From the Indian Auto LPG Coalition

Suyash Gupta, the Director General of IAC, called the decision “positive and timely.” He said that “adding Auto LPG to Telangana’s clean fuel policy is a big step in India’s efforts to fight rising air pollution in cities. According to him, using Auto LPG not only lowers emissions but also helps improve the country’s energy security by reducing its dependence on petrol and diesel.”

In addition, the IAC believes that such fuel policies can show quick and scalable results, especially in crowded urban areas where pollution levels are high.

Need for Wider Adoption Across India

While Telangana’s step is praiseworthy, the IAC has also urged other states and the Central Government to take similar actions. They believe that India needs a mix of clean fuels—like CNG, electric, biofuels, and Auto LPG—for a successful and smooth transition to clean mobility.

With over 33 crore petrol and diesel vehicles on Indian roads today, it is not possible to completely shift to electric vehicles overnight. Instead, retrofitting existing vehicles with cleaner fuels such as Auto LPG can be a realistic and affordable solution for many vehicle owners.

How This Aligns with National Goals

Recently, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) also announced that new petrol and diesel vehicles will not be allowed in e-commerce and cab fleets in the Delhi-NCR region from January 1, 2026. This policy is a clear sign that India is serious about reducing vehicle emissions, especially in areas with high pollution.

The IAC supported this national-level decision and said that more such steps are needed across different parts of the country. They are ready to work with both governments and the industry to encourage more use of clean fuels like Auto LPG.

A Clean and Practical Way Forward

To sum up, Telangana’s approval for Auto LPG in 40,000 new autorickshaws is not just a local policy—it sets an example for other states. It also shows that clean mobility solutions do not always have to be expensive or complicated. Fuels like Auto LPG offer a practical, cost-effective, and clean alternative that can bring fast results in the fight against air pollution.

The IAC hopes that this move will lead to stronger fuel diversity and faster adoption of sustainable transport solutions, especially in cities where air quality is a growing concern.
