ZF India Partners with CV Manufacturer to Supply Advanced Transmissions for Heavy-Duty Trucks

A Strategic Move to Boost India's Heavy-Duty Commercial Vehicle Efficiency

ZF India has signed a major partnership agreement with a leading Indian commercial vehicle manufacturer to supply several thousand 9-speed manual and automatic transmissions. The deal, finalized in March 2025, aims to support heavy-duty trucks with over 300 horsepower and align with the “Make in India” vision by manufacturing the systems at ZF’s Chakan facility in Pune.

Key Highlights of the ZF-CV Manufacturer Partnership

This strategic deal is a part of ZF’s ongoing commitment to enhance vehicle performance, fuel efficiency, and operational reliability in India’s growing commercial vehicle market.

Transmission Details and Manufacturing

  • The agreement includes ZF’s EcoMid manual transmissions and EcoTronic Mid automatic transmissions, engineered specifically for trucks weighing above 25 tonnes and delivering up to 1300 Nm of torque.
  • Both transmission types will be locally manufactured in Pune, contributing to domestic manufacturing goals.

Performance Capabilities and Segment Focus

  • The EcoMid system is tailored for commercial vehicles with GVW up to 55 tonnes.
  • ZF also offers 9-speed transmissions capable of handling up to 1500 Nm, and 12-speed systems rated for 3200 Nm, showing the company’s focus on high-torque applications.

Technological Advantages

  • The modular design platform helps improve fuel efficiency, reduce driver fatigue, and extend clutch life, resulting in a more economical and sustainable transport solution.
  • The availability of direct drive and overdrive configurations adds flexibility to various driving needs and terrains.

Statements from Key Leaders

Akash Passey, President of ZF Group in India, emphasized the brand’s long-standing commitment, “With over 60 years in India, ZF has continuously invested in technologies that drive operational excellence. This partnership strengthens our footprint in the heavy-duty segment while aligning with the Make in India initiative.”

  1. Kaniappan, Senior Vice President at ZF Group, added, “These transmission systems will play a crucial role in supporting the commercial vehicle industry’s transition towards higher efficiency and reliability in heavy-duty operations.”

ZF Group’s Broader Commitment

ZF operates as a global leader in vehicle technology solutions, serving passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and industrial applications. In FY2024, the company reported €41.4 billion in global sales and employed over 161,600 people across 161 production sites in 30 countries.

In India, ZF continues to provide cutting-edge solutions across autonomous, connected, and electric vehicle technologies — marking its role as a technology enabler in the next generation of commercial mobility.

Outlook on the Future of CV Transmissions in India

This strategic move by ZF is expected to further accelerate India's transition toward robust and efficient heavy-duty vehicles. With a firm grip on advanced transmission technology and localized manufacturing, ZF India is well-positioned to shape the next chapter in India’s commercial vehicle evolution.
