Ashok Leyland partnered with Nidec Motor Corporation on October 3, 2024, to design and develop e-drive motors for India's commercial vehicle needs. According to the partnership, a Centre of Excellence (CoE) will be established. It will focus on new motor technologies, advanced power electronics systems, and improved gear-shifting mechanisms for electric vehicles. This partnership aims to develop advanced mobility solutions and electric mobility solutions.
The agreement was signed by Shenu Agarwal, Ashok Leyland's MD and CEO, and Michael Briggs, Nidec’s President. It was officially signed in the presence of key executives from both companies, including Ashok Leyland’s CTO, Dr. N. Saravanan, SVP Product Development, Dr. Kanakasabapathi Subramanian, and Nidec’s Chief Growth Officer, Greg Gorman. Further, the event highlighted the shared vision of both organizations to drive the future of electric mobility in India.
Ashok Leyland’s step into this partnership aligns with its vision to create sustainable transportation solutions. This collaboration with Nidec will focus on building electric drive systems that meet the unique operational needs of India’s commercial vehicle market.
The newly created CoE will be dedicated to developing cutting-edge technologies for electric motors and power systems. Both companies will jointly contribute to research, development, training, and lab facilities. The CoE will also focus on creating new motor systems for Ashok Leyland and its electric vehicle division, Switch Mobility.
In this partnership, Ashok Leyland will continue sourcing motors from Nidec for its current electric vehicle range while working closely with them on future projects. The partnership will also support the creation of a local supply chain for next-generation electric vehicles, ensuring that India’s commercial transport is ready for a sustainable future.
