A new initiative of Honda is to install Honda Mobile Power Pack Exchanger e: as battery swapping stations and conduct battery sharing service in the city.
Honda on Friday announced its plans to begin battery sharing service for electric tricycle taxis (rickshaws) in the first half of 2022 by using the Honda Mobile Power Pack e: (MPP e:).
According to the Japanese automaker, the Honda MPP E: is a portable and swappable lithium-ion battery capable of storing over 1.3 kWh, which is an increase from the previous version of the MPP. To launch this service, Honda will set up a local subsidiary to operate India's battery sharing service business. This subsidiary will set up several Honda mobile power pack exchangers as e: battery swapping stations and operate a battery sharing service in the city, Honda Said.
Minoru Kato, Chief Officer, Life Creation Operations, Honda Motor, said in a statement, "Honda MPP has immense potential to electrify all types of devices including small sized mobility products. By offering battery sharing service in India, Honda will contribute towards accelerated electrification of rickshaws and expanded use of renewable energy."
He added that Honda will continue to serve people worldwide with the pleasure of expanding the potential of their lives by further expanding the use of MPPs to wider areas.
The company said in a statement, "Honda will work with electric rickshaw producers and start the service in selected cities first and then expand to other cities in stages.
The automaker said it began performance testing in India in February 2021, with 30 units of electric rickshaw taxis operating for a total of over 200,000 km. This test identified the issues to be addressed and confirmed commercial viability, the statement said.
