PM E-DRIVE Scheme: Boosting Electric Vehicle Growth in India

The PM E-DRIVE Scheme will Transform India's EV Sector, Promoting Sustainable Transportation

The Indian government is taking a significant step towards promoting electric vehicles (EVs) with the launch of the PM E-DRIVE Scheme. This initiative, announced at the recent India E-Truck Exchange event, aims to accelerate the adoption of electric trucks (e-trucks) and further India's goal of reducing transportation emissions. The scheme allocates INR 500 crore to incentivize the use of electric trucks, aligning with India’s climate commitments and the Supreme Court’s directive to replace diesel trucks by January 2024.

Key Highlights

Funding Allocation: The PM E-DRIVE Scheme will provide INR 500 crore each for electric trucks and ambulances, with additional funds for EV infrastructure & public transport. The government has earmarked INR 2000 crore for charging infrastructure and INR 4391 crore for e-buses, aiming to address urban pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Collaboration with Key Stakeholders: The India E-Truck Exchange event brought together industry leaders, including Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), logistics providers, and shippers, to discuss strategies for utilizing the allocated funds to promote electric truck adoption. The event was organized by the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) in collaboration with the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT).

Focus on Emission Reduction: Medium- and heavy-duty trucks account for 44% of CO₂ emissions in the transportation sector, despite only comprising 3% of the vehicle fleet. The PM E-DRIVE Scheme is seen as a crucial move to curb these emissions and transition to cleaner transportation alternatives.

Statements from Key Executives

Kamran Rizvi, Secretary at MHI, emphasised the crucial role of electric vehicles in India’s transition to sustainable transportation, saying, “For electric trucks, the journey has just begun. Let’s make full use of the INR 500 crore under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme to promote electric trucks,”

Dr. Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary at MHI, addressed the significance of shifting from diesel trucks to electric vehicles and stated, “E-trucks are vital for reducing both fuel costs and air pollution. Our objective is to fast-track the adoption of electric trucks to create a cleaner transport network,”

Amit Bhatt, India Managing Director of ICCT, highlighted the alignment of the PM E-DRIVE Scheme with both national and global environmental targets, said “Our research shows that for India to achieve Net Zero by 2070, we need to electrify all road transport between 2045 and 2050, including trucks,”.

Impact and Future Prospects

The PM E-DRIVE Scheme is expected to revolutionize India’s transportation sector by promoting electric mobility and reducing the reliance on fossil fuels. Electric trucks have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 83% when powered by renewable energy, according to ICCT research. The initiative also aims to boost the sales of zero-emission trucks (ZETs), such as battery electric trucks (BETs), which are critical to meeting India’s climate goals under the Paris Agreement.

With the deployment of electric trucks, India is set to make a significant leap towards a sustainable transportation system. This shift will also support the country’s broader environmental and economic objectives. The PM E-DRIVE Scheme, with its focus on clean mobility solutions, reflects the country's commitment to achieving its climate targets and transforming the trucking industry.
