The Telangana government has introduced a new electric vehicle (EV) policy to encourage eco-friendly transportation. Announced on November 18, 2023, this policy provides a 100% exemption from road tax and registration fees for all electric vehicles purchased and registered in the state. This exemption will remain valid for two years, until December 31, 2026.
Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar stated that the initiative, under Government Order (GO) 41, aims to make Hyderabad a pollution-free city. The exemption applies to a wide range of vehicles, including electric two-wheelers, four-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, light goods carriers, tractors, and buses.
Electric buses owned and operated by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) will enjoy a lifetime exemption from road tax and registration fees. Additionally, buses owned by industries that transport their employees (for non-commercial use) will also be exempt for the next two years.
This policy highlights Telangana’s commitment to reducing vehicular emissions and supporting India’s broader sustainability goals.
