ZF Wabco Plans A New Plant Near Chennai For Zero Accidents And To Improves Fuel Economy by 20%

According to an executive, the company's board has approved a "sizeable expansion in the vicinity of Chennai" to serve both export demand and local. The new plant is a segment of the company's larger master plan to make India a digital and engineering technology hub globally.

Chennai: Auto component major Wabco India, a part of ZF Group Commercial Vehicle Control Systems Division after the acquisition in May 2020, is thinking of setting up a greenfield plant in Tamil Nadu's Oragadam auto hub.

According to an executive, the company's board has approved a "sizeable expansion in the vicinity of Chennai" to serve both export demand and local. The new plant is a segment of the company's larger master plan to make India a digital and engineering technology hub globally.

P Kaniappan, MD, Wabco India, said: "We are searching for a cantle of land for our next project and we want a piece of land in Oragadam. We are working with the Tamil Nadu's government on this. Our board has approved this proposal." But he refused to give the monetary details of the project.

The new plant is part of Wabco's aspiring strategy to make India an engineering and tech hub. "We are growing Chennai as an engineering exchange for commercial vehicles globally along with India," said Kaniappan.

"There are overall 900 people working in engineering in India. 100 of them are in our new universal hub for digital technology in Bengaluru and the rest in Chennai split between our plant in Porur and Ambattur which is for software development."

Currently, German auto parts major ZF holds Wabco India's 75%, headquartered in Chennai and has an out and out export-oriented plant in Mahindra World City.

"We are active towards making India a centre of excellence for ZF's engineering globally," said Kaniappan.

Currently, exports include 45% of Wabco's revenues while aftermarket is 15% and the domestic is 40%, he added.
