Delhi Targets 100% Electric Public Transport by 2026

Delhi Targets 100% Electric Public Transport by 2026

400 DEVi Electric Buses Deployed for Last-Mile Connectivity

Delhi has taken a major step towards transforming its public transport ecosystem by launching 400 new electric buses under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Interconnector (DEVi) initiative. This marks the beginning of a large-scale shift toward full electrification of the city’s commercial public transport by the end of 2026.

Key Highlights of the DEVi Electric Mobility Drive

The DEVi initiative marks a bold step toward creating a cleaner, more efficient commercial transport network in Delhi.

  • 400 electric buses deployed in Phase 1 across East and West Delhi.

  • Targets 100% electric public transport by end of 2026.

  • Focus on metro and bus terminal connectivity for improved commuter experience.

  • Each DEVi bus has 23 seats, including six for women, plus space for 13 standing passengers.

  • Affordable fares between ₹10 and ₹25; free travel for women.

  • 2,080 more electric buses to be added by year-end.

  • Plan to install 13,700 public charging stations by 2030.

This initiative also complements Delhi's broader electric vehicle ecosystem development, especially for commercial and public use.

A Strategic Shift Towards Electric Commercial Fleets

The DEVi project is designed to improve last-mile connectivity in busy areas like Ghazipur, Vinod Nagar East, and Nangloi, using modern, zero-emission electric buses. These buses are not just commuter-friendly but also commercially efficient, aligning with the state’s push for sustainable and clean public transport.

The commercial vehicle segment, particularly intra-city electric buses and goods carriers, is a key focus under the Delhi EV Policy 2.0. According to the draft, the government aims for 80% electrification of the city’s bus fleet by 2025, with only electric buses to be procured going forward.

Investment in Supporting Infrastructure

To support this massive transition, the government plans to invest in:

  • New bus depots for EV fleets.

  • Rapid expansion of charging infrastructure.

  • Creation of EV maintenance hubs to ensure uptime and service continuity.

These developments signal a strong intent to create a robust commercial EV ecosystem that supports both passenger transport and cargo movement within the city.

Statement from Delhi CM on EV Vision

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized,“By next year, we will shift Delhi’s public transport to 100% electric mode so that we can reduce the problem of pollution. DEVi has brought 400 buses onto the streets of Delhi today.”

She also added,“We will soon roll out an EV policy for both public and private vehicles. Private owners will be supported through rebates and incentives to increase EV adoption on Delhi’s roads.”

Outlook for Delhi’s Commercial EV Ecosystem

Delhi’s EV market continues to show strong momentum, especially in the three-wheeler and goods vehicle categories. In 2024 alone, 82,081 EVs were registered, reflecting a 30% increase from 2022.

The upcoming EV 2.0 Policy includes:

  • Incentives of ₹10,000/kWh (up to ₹30,000) for two-wheelers.

  • Up to ₹45,000 for e-rickshaws and electric goods carriers.

  • ₹75,000 for four-wheeled goods EVs.

  • ₹15 lakh support for the first 200 electric school buses.

These measures aim to strengthen Delhi’s commercial EV segment, making it cleaner, more cost-efficient, and better equipped for urban needs.
