Government Targets 33% of Trucks to Run on LNG in Next 5 To 7 Years

The Indian government has announced an ambitious plan to transition a third of the country's long-haul heavy-duty vehicle fleet to run on LNG. This shift is expected to take place within the next 5-7 years. This move aims to promote cleaner energy use and reduce emissions in the transportation sector.

Key Highlights of the Government's LNG Strategy

  • The government targets 33% of the long-haul HDV fleet to be powered by LNG by 2030.

  • An allocation of 0.5 million metric standard cubic meters per day (mmscmd) of domestic gas for the next three years will stabilize LNG prices.

  • The allocated volume is sufficient to support approximately 50,000 trucks running on LNG.

  • The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas plans to establish 49 LNG dispensing stations across major routes.

  • Small-scale liquefaction plants are proposed to convert biogas into bio-LNG for transportation.

Focus on Infrastructure and Conversion Incentives

To support this transition, the ministry has mandated state-run oil companies to set up 49 LNG dispensing stations along major trucking routes. This infrastructure development is crucial for ensuring easy access to LNG fuel, which is a key factor in promoting its widespread use. Furthermore, the government may advise oil marketing companies to offer incentives to fleet owners to convert their diesel trucks to LNG trucks. These incentives could make the switch to LNG more financially viable, encouraging more operators to adopt this cleaner fuel.

Small-Scale Plants to Produce Bio-LNG

As part of the broader strategy to boost LNG use in trucking, the ministry's draft proposal includes several key initiatives. Moreover, it emphasizes the development of small-scale liquefaction plants in off-grid areas. These plants will convert biogas into bio-LNG, offering an additional source of clean energy for the transport sector. Consequently, this move would not only help meet the increasing fuel demand but also promote the use of renewable resources, aligning with India's sustainable energy goals.
Leadership’s Perspective

A representative from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "The government’s plan to transition a third of the trucking fleet to LNG marks a significant step toward sustainable mobility. This effort requires collaboration between government bodies, oil companies, and fleet operators to build the necessary infrastructure and support systems."

Looking ahead, the shift to LNG in the trucking sector presents numerous advantages. LNG is a cleaner alternative to diesel, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and particulate matter significantly. This transition aligns with India's commitment to environmental sustainability and energy security. Additionally, using domestic gas for LNG production reduces dependency on imports, further strengthening the country’s energy resilience.
