Ashok Leyland to Slash Carbon Emissions by 60 per cent

Ashok Leyland has recently announced that it has increased the clean energy sourcing for its India operations to 60%.

In May 2020, Hinduja Renewables, a part of the Hinduja Group, built a solar plant with 75 MWP capacity for Ashok Leyland in Sivagangai district, in Tamil Nadu. The plant set up through its subsidiary, Prathama Solarconnect Energy, was commissioned in just nine months and it is expected to generate more than 120 million units of power annually.

Special Characteristics of the Solar Plant

The fixed-tilt mounting arrangement of solar panels enables maximum energy production. The latest drone technology helps relay instant information on the progress made. The company uses data analytics for smart maintenance. Preventive and predictive maintenance systems ensure best in class capacity utilisation factor during the plant’s entire lifecycle.

Shom Hinduja, President of Alternative Energy & Sustainability Initiatives at Hinduja Group, said, “The project will assist Ashok Leyland in significantly reducing its carbon footprint, and achieving its sustainability goals. The Hinduja Group is in the process of assessing its global operations, and is planning similar ESG initiatives across its different companies.”

Speaking on occasion, Vipin Sondhi, MD & CEO, Ashok Leyland, said, "While we continue to take massive strides towards realising our vision of becoming one among the Top 10 global commercial vehicle manufacturers, it is important for us to ensure this process is a continuous affair. A crucial element of this vision is to ensure that our energy requirements come from renewable sources. With the commencement of operations at the Vepancolum solar plant, we have taken a giant step forward towards reducing our carbon footprint. The renewable energy production will help us cater to 75% of the total energy requirement in Tamil Nadu, and 60% of the total requirement across India. The captive solar plant will enable Ashok Leyland to reduce carbon emissions by 85,000 tonnes, which is the equivalent of planting 1,57,487 trees annually".
