Vehicles Without FASTag to Pay Higher Toll Fees
Starting November 15, 2025, the Indian government will introduce new toll rules on National Highways to promote digital payments. Under these new changes, vehicles without a valid FASTag will have to pay extra toll fees compared to those using FASTag.
According to the government, this step aims to boost efficiency, reduce congestion, and enhance the travel experience for highway users. The changes have been made under an amendment to the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.
New Toll Payment Rates Explained
From mid-November, vehicles that do not have FASTag will face double toll charges if they choose to pay in cash. However, those who pay through digital methods, such as Unified Payment Interface (UPI), will need to pay 1.25 times the regular fee.
"Such users who opt to pay the fee via the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), will be charged only 1.25 times the applicable user fee for that category of the vehicle. For example, if a vehicle needs to pay a user fee of Rs. 100 through valid FASTag, the fee will be Rs. 200 if paid in cash and Rs. 125, if paid via UPI."
Purpose Behind the New Rules
In addition, the ministry mentioned that this move will encourage more people to use digital payments and reduce the dependency on cash transactions at toll plazas. It will also help in faster toll collection and greater transparency in toll operations.
Furthermore, the government said the changes are meant to make highway travel smoother for all users. "The revised rules will encourage the adoption of digital payments, enhance transparency in toll operations, and improve the overall user experience on National Highways," it added.
Overall, these new toll rules mark another major step toward India’s digital transformation in highway management.
