Tata Motors Takes a Bold Step Towards Hydrogen-Powered Transportation
Tata Motors, in collaboration with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), is set to revolutionize India's commercial vehicle sector with the launch of hydrogen-powered trucks. The pilot project, which is scheduled to begin this quarter, will serve as a testbed for hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2ICE) in long-distance trucking.
Key Highlights of Tata Motors' Hydrogen-Powered Truck Initiative
Groundbreaking Collaboration and National Green Hydrogen Mission
This initiative is part of India’s broader National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming to harness the potential of green hydrogen as a clean fuel source. Tata Motors and IOC will work together to deploy hydrogen-powered trucks, marking a first for the country. The pilot phase will run for 12 to 18 months and will explore both the product's performance and the required refueling infrastructure for hydrogen as an alternative fuel.
Routes for the Pilot Project
The pilot program will cover key routes including:
- Jamshedpur-Kalinganagar
- Mumbai-Ahmedabad
- Mumbai-Pune
These routes have been chosen to assess the commercial viability of hydrogen-powered vehicles and the feasibility of setting up hydrogen refueling infrastructure.
Tata Prima H.28 Unveiled at Bharat Mobility Expo 2025
At the recently concluded Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, Tata Motors unveiled the Tata Prima H.28, its groundbreaking hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle. This is India’s first commercial vehicle featuring a four-cylinder H2ICE engine with a remarkable range of 550 kilometers, further solidifying Tata Motors’ commitment to sustainable mobility.
Refueling Infrastructure and Hydrogen Integration
IOCL will play a pivotal role in this project by setting up hydrogen refueling stations at its outlets. This partnership will enable Tata Motors to run the hydrogen trucks and gain practical insights into the challenges and opportunities of hydrogen-based transportation.
Statements from Key Executives
Girish Wagh, Executive Director at Tata Motors, shared the company’s excitement about this pioneering project, stating, “Tata Motors is the first OEM to receive the government’s hydrogen pilot allotment. These vehicles will begin operating on three major routes this quarter. This is not only a product trial but also an experiment in setting up the necessary hydrogen refueling infrastructure.”
He further emphasized, “This collaboration with IOC is a crucial step in understanding how hydrogen can become a mainstream fuel option for long-distance trucking in India.”
What’s Next for Tata Motors and the Commercial Vehicle Market?
Despite challenges faced in the current fiscal year, Tata Motors is optimistic about the recovery of commercial vehicle sales. The company anticipates a strong rebound in FY26, with the fourth quarter expected to provide a clearer picture of market trends.
As Tata Motors continues to innovate in the green hydrogen sector, it positions itself at the forefront of India's push towards cleaner, more sustainable transportation options.
Future Prospects
The launch of hydrogen-powered trucks in India marks a crucial milestone in the country’s journey towards reducing carbon emissions and embracing green energy solutions. With Tata Motors leading the way, the future of commercial vehicles in India looks promising, as more players are likely to follow suit in adopting hydrogen fuel technology.
The pilot project will provide valuable insights into the practicalities of hydrogen refueling infrastructure and the potential for wider adoption across the transport sector.
