Tata LPT 1916 Truck

The Tata LPT 1916 is a 19-ton GVW truck that provides a balance of power, fuel efficiency, and comfort. It is designed for intercity and long-haul operations, which makes it a good option for companies seeking a reliable commercial vehicle. Tata has incorporated features such as Fleet Edge telematics, a high-performance braking system, and enhanced mileage to increase its productivity and efficiency. It also features enhanced safety features to keep drivers and cargo safe. Though it checks all the boxes, there are some areas where it can be better.

The LPT 1916 design features the traditional Tata LPT cabin layout, which is all about functionality. The build quality is robust, and the strengthened chassis allows the truck to support heavy loads.

The truck has a sturdy chassis and a high ground clearance of 225 mm, which is useful for bumpy roads. The parabolic front suspension and semi-elliptical leaf spring rear suspension make the truck capable of withstanding heavy loads while keeping it stable. The 7.50 R 16, 16 PR tyres at the front and rear give good grip, though a tubeless tyre option would have improved durability.

Tata has focused more on the driver receiving a standard adjustable seat, which provides good comfort for long road hours. The cabin layout is simple, with all controls being within easy reach.

A standout feature is the addition of the Fleet Edge telematics system, which provides real-time feedback on vehicle performance, fuel economy, and route tracking. The interior also has an infotainment system with a quick USB charger and steering-mounted controls, giving it a contemporary feel. To enhance long-distance comfort, the interior can be improved with added storage space and improved noise insulation.

The Tata LPT 1916 is equipped with a 3.3L NG BS6 Phase 2 engine that produces 160 HP and 475 Nm of torque. The engine is optimised to produce more torque at lower RPMs, which reduces the number of gear changes and makes it fuel-efficient.

The truck has a smooth and trustworthy G 400 (5F + 1R) transmission. The hydraulically operated clutch with pneumatic support requires less driver effort, particularly during stop-and-go driving. One major feature is the dual fuel economy mode, which allows the driver to toggle between performance and economy based on load and road conditions.

Tata has also provided cruise control, which is an excellent feature for highway cruising and keeps the driver relaxed. Due to its advanced electronic control system and OBD2 (On-Board Diagnostics) for real-time monitoring of efficiency, overall mileage of the truck is very effective for this segment.

However, a 6-speed transmission option would enhance highway driving. Though the fuel tank sizes (160L/250L) are good, a bit larger tank for long-distance driving would have been more helpful.

Tata has ensured that the LPT 1916 is equipped with several safety features to safeguard both the driver and the load. One of these is an enhanced air braking system, which provides better braking even under heavy loads. The reverse parking buzzer is also useful, minimising blind spots when reversing in congested areas.

Additional safety features are an auto shut-off valve, a high-pressure fuel filter, a refueling interlock device, and Swagelok fittings. The electronic viscous fan enhances engine cooling and overall reliability.

The addition of a Gear Shift Advisor (GSA) is a thoughtful touch, advising the driver on ideal gear shifts for improved performance and fuel economy. However, other features such as a hill-hold assist or an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) would have increased its safety quotient even more.
